Footsbarn Theatre bandwagon reaches Thiruvananthapuram with“Indian Tempest”
Footsbarn, a French travelling theatre group in collaboration with Abhinaya, presents the rich and evocative reworking of the timeless Shakespearean play “Indian Tempest”, this 25 th of January, Friday, at 7 p.m., @ the Govt. College for Women Auditorium, Vazhuthacaud. The play has five artistes from Kerala.
Footsbarn Travelling Theatre is one of the world’s leading touring companies performing for the most part in one of its circus big tops but also in theatres throughout the world. Renowned for its exciting adaptations of classics such as Shakespeare & Molière transcending the barrier of language with its unique blend of visual theatre, music and magic.
In thirty five years, Footsbarn has produced nearly 60 plays and travelled to the six Continents and is a truly multi-national group. The actors possess a multiplicity of talents and theatrical techniques all of which inhabit and enrich every performance.
Their collaboration with Abhinaya dates back to 1994 when they were in Kerala to perform their Shakespearean play “Romeo & Juliet”. Five artistes from Kerala were chosen that time and the three were part of Footsbarn’s adaptation of Homer’s “La Odyssey” in 1999. They were in India again in 2005 to perform “Perchance to Dream” that enchanted the audience here.
The present production of “Indian Tempest” was envisaged in five phases, viz.,
· In January 2012, the first rehearsals were hosted by Abhinaya in Thiruvananthapuram
· Between March and May 2012, there was a Residency in Guimaraes, Portugal with the first performance in late May
· Between June and October 2012, the European Tour with performances in Portugal, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands enthralled audiences everwhere they went
· In the present phase, between November 2012 & February 2013, the Indian Tour juggernaut rolls across Jaipur, New Delhi, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
· Between May and October 2013 the European Tour including a series of performances at the Globe Theatre, London, in the Czech Republic and France, opening the season.
With a strong flavour of Kerala, this rich and evocative reworking of one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays is set on a timeless imaginary island – a world of spirits, shapes and monsters. It brings together a magic and illusion, desire and romantic love, dreams and ambition, as well as treachery and torment, bringing along in its wake a bestiary of creatures who must share a world where music rules everything. Poetry beyond language. The richness of this play is a gift, a story to tell, dance and sing to people of two continents as similar and diverse as India and Europe.
