Bio of Author, K. Saradamoni
Dr. K. Saradamoni was born in Kollam and studied in Kollam, Trivandrum, Madras, and France. She started working at the Bureau of Economics in Trivandrum and moved to Delhi in 1961, where she worked at the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi Centre for about thirty years until her retirement in 1988. She moved back to Trivandrum in 1989 and remained active both as an academic and public intellectual until her passing on May 26, 2021. Though formally trained in economics, her Ph.D. thesis, completed in France under the supervision of the renowned social anthropologist Louis Dumont, focused on economic history, particularly on the Pulayas of Kerala. This work was published in English as ‘Emergence of a Slave Caste – the Pulayas of Kerala’. Her research interests included land, labor, gender, caste, and class. She published several books, contributed chapters to edited volumes, and wrote many articles. She was a sought-after speaker and writer in both English and Malayalam. For members of the AF fraternity, it will be of interest to know that her association with the late French Indologist Madeleine Biardeau began in the late forties in Trivandrum when she was studying at the Women’s College. They remained lifelong friends until Madeleine’s passing in 2010.
