“An evening with Kenizé Mourad” with presentation and talk with Anupama Raju on the occasion of the launch of English edition of Kenizé Mourad’s latest novel“In the City of Gold and Silver”.
Kenizé Mourad – biography
Born in Paris, Kenizé Mourad is the daughter of Sultana Selma Rauf, the grand daughter of the Ottoman Sultan Omar the 5th, and Syed Sajid Hussain Ali, the Rajah of Kotwara, a princely state near Luknow.
She studied sociology and psychology at the Sorbonne University in Paris before entering journalism. She has worked as a freelance for various newspapers including Ouest France,Les Nouvelles d’Alsace, Le Monde Diplomatique, and for radio programs at France Culture. But she made most of her career in Le Nouvel Observateur, from 1970 to 1983, covering the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.
She published her first novel De la part de la princesse morte in 1987 (Published in English under the title: Memories of an Ottoman Princess), This Novel won the Prix Anaïs Ségalas de l’Académie française and the Prix des lectrices de Elle. Other popular books by her include a novel Le Jardin de Badalpour published in 1998, a book on the Israeli- Palestinian questionLe parfum de notre terre : Voix de Palestine et d’Israël (published in 2003), and Dans la ville d’or et d’argent in 2010.
In 2012, the French government named her “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letters”. She is now the Godmother of the India Book fair which takes place in Paris.
