“How to reconcile climate and development?”

On August, 06th, in Kochi, at Orthic Creative Center, Agence Française de Développement(AFD) will inaugurate the photo exhibition “60 SOLUTIONS against climate change”, based on 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand (GoodPlanet Foundation).

While France is gearing up to host the 21stConference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in December 2015, AFD and the GoodPlanet Foundation are using images to highlight innovative and effective solutions combining the fight against climate change and economic development in AFD’s 71 agencies worldwide.

The exhibition comprises 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand from his famous “Earth from Above” series and presents concrete initiatives in four sectors: cities, agriculture, energy transition and climate change adaptation.

The inauguration of the exhibition  will be followed by a Café Scientifique session, with discussion and interaction on “How to reconcile climate and development?”

The key note speakers will be:

Elias George IAS, MD, Kochi Metro Rail Limited: He will talk about making the city more livable and environment friendly through integrated transport system.

Adv. Harish Vaudevan, environmental activist, will address the challenges of climate change through a legal perspective.

AFD, a major and innovative international actor in climate finance

In line with its Climate Strategy, AFD uses a wide range of financial tools (investment loans, budget support, guarantees, equity or grant investments and technical assistance) to finance positive and realistic solutions to combat climate change. It benefits from and mobilizes resources from European and international mandates. Among the initiatives presented in this exhibition by actors from both the North and South, 15 are supported by AFD and illustrate the wide range of financing in all the countries where AFD operates.

In India, AFD takes concrete action for development and the fight against climate change in the sectors of energy,urban infrastructure and biodiversity conservation, by supporting projects which have a positive impact on the climate. These projects are related to:

  • The development of renewable energies and the dissemination of best practices for energy efficiency in order to guarantee sustainable growth;
  • The development of low-carbon urban infrastructure, particularly in the transport and water sectors, in order to gear up for demographic transition in urban areas;
  • The protection of the environment and preservation of the country’s biodiversity.
