What is Alliance Française?

The first Alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris. Its mission is to promote the use and appreciation of the French language and culture throughout the world through French language classes and cultural programs. Today, it is an established, world-renowned network comprising more than 800 branches in 135 countries, with over 400,000 students per year. All of these factors make the Alliance Française the largest French language teaching and cultural network in the world.

Fondation AF

Since its creation in 1884, the Alliance Française de Paris has played a crucial role in expanding the network of Alliances Françaises worldwide. In July 2007, its status underwent modification, and it became the Fondation Alliance Française. This foundation is officially recognized as a non-profit organization and serves as the moral and legal reference for all Alliances Françaises around the world.

The Fondation exclusively owns the “Alliance Française” label and grants the right to use it. Whenever a new Alliance is established, it must refer to the Fondation for official recognition after the examination of its status. Before awarding this label, the Fondation ensures that the associations, in compliance with local laws, also adhere to a set of guiding principles defined by itself and common to all the Alliances. These principles include strict political and religious neutrality with respect to local disputes.

The Fondation receives joint support from the French Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of National Education, both contributing to its budget and the management of its workforce.
